Poetry and black electronic music is not a familiar combination of art forms, but no one can claim that the string of UK poets that the we’ve brought down conform to the usual stereotypes! So let us introduce you to Charlie Dark, founder of the revolutionary Blacktronica collective and formerly of one third of the critically acclaimed ensemble Attica Blues.
Blacktronica is a brilliant creative collective that promotes and celebrates British Black culture and includes DJs, poets and artists. It has become a focal point for London’s night life winning the approval of the Guardian, Time Out and other notable publications. BBC Radio 1 included it in its list of the five best UK nights in 2004. Conceived in the winter of 2001, Blacktronica continues to push, explore and unify the innovative sounds of the black electronic music scene in the UK with its global cousins.
What could you expect from a typical Blacktronica night? DJ sets and live performances are sprinkled with impromptu jams and spoken word performances. And we’ve got Charlie Dark and Morgan Zarate (aka Morgan Spacek) on the decks!
Morgan has had two albums out as producer with his band spacek plus numerous productions and remixes for the likes of Sleepy Brown (Outkast), Common, Mos Def, Amp Fiddler, Frank n Dank to name a few. Presently he’s completing his debut solo album which will be featuring a diverse set of artists including Dizzee Rascal, Ghostface Killer, Raphael Saadi, Eska.
The night will also feature local drum ‘n’ bass and hip hop collective The Works jamming with Charlie and Morgan.
So come along guys! Bring all of your neighbours, your neighbour’s neighbour and your neighbour’s neighbour’s neighbour!
Ejnoi yourself blood!
